Licypriya wins Young Eco-Hero Award

Licypriya Kangujam, a 12-year-old climate and environmental activist from Manipur, has been honoured with the prestigious International Young Eco-Hero Award for 2024 .
The award consisting of cash prize is presented annually to young students who exhibit exceptional leadership and dedication in tackling critical environmental challenges.
According to a statement of The Child Movement, Licypriya was selected as a co-winner in the 8-12 age group for her innovative project, "Plastic Money Shop".
A panel of independent judges chose her based on the impact of her work, leadership skills, and commitment to creating a sustainable future.
Launched in 2022, the "Plastic Money Shop" allows people to exchange single-use plastic items for essential goods like rice, school supplies, and plant saplings.
The collected plastic is then recycled into eco-friendly products, helping reduce waste and promote sustainable practices.
"We are incredibly proud to honour these young eco-heroes who are driving meaningful change across the globe," said Action for Nature president Beryl Kay.
"From tackling plastic pollution to protecting coral reefs and blind dolphins, these extraordinary young activists are leading the way with innovative and inspiring solutions to our planet s pressing environmental challenges," he added.
In addition to her project, Licypriya is a passionate advocate for climate action.
Through her "Child Movement" campaign, she empowers children to become leaders in the fight against climate change.
She had organised tree-planting drives, conducted educational programmes on climate change, and actively advocated for cleaner air and water policies.
Licypriya's efforts have not gone unnoticed.
She has met with world leaders and spoken at numerous institutions in over 32 countries, amplifying the voices of young people in the global climate conversation.
"Every child can lead the change," said Licypriya who also called for collective efforts for a sustainable future.
