Imphal, August 07 2025:
Apunba Manipur Huyen Lanlong Lup (AMHLL) celebrated its 9th foundation day at Lainingthou Khoubomba Haraopung, Changangei on Thursday.
The celebration was attended by Manipur University of Culture vice chancellor Prof Paonam Gunindro, COHSEM chairman Takhellambam Ojit Singh, Padmashree (Thang-ta) Kakchingtabam Sanathoi Sharma, Manipur University former dean Prof W Nabakumar and AMHLL president and MUC Thang-ta Department faculty Okram Manglem Meetei as presidium members.
Speaking at the programme, Prof Gunindro reminded that Thang-ta is more than just a martial art, as it embodies cultural elements deeply intertwined with Manipuri society.
He noted that Huyen Lanlong, faced decline after British general Collet banned the possession of swords and other weapons on April 30, 1891, following the Khongjom War.
However, it saw a revival on May 30, 1934, when Maharaj Churachand, the then king of Manipur, reinstated the practice.
As a result, Thang-ta has reached its present stature and is now even included as a subject in MA courses.
The foundation day is also celebrated in Assam, Tripura, Bangladesh, Myanmar and other places in Manipur as 'Huyen Lanlong Numit' .
