Discourse on 'Manipur Merger Issue' on Oct 29

To help the public understand the impact of the merger agreement on Manipur and foster a unified stance, All Manipur Women's Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA) and Committee on Human Rights (COHR) will jointly organise the "32nd National Convention on the Manipur Merger Issue" on October 29 .
Addressing media persons at Manipur Press Club, here, on Wednesday, AMAWOVA president Y Kunjarani stated that during the reign of Kings in Manipur, there were instances where the people revolted against the tyrannical rule, even expressing that democracy was preferable to the oppressive regime.
She recounted that after the British left, Manipur fell into chaos, and in the midst of this turmoil, the British colonial government, without the consent of the people, secretly entered into an agreement with the feudal lord (King) of Manipur at Shillong on September 21, 1949 .
Subsequently, on October 15 the same year, India took control of Manipur through an unauthenticated agreement.
She further recalled that to ensure that the people fully understand the history of Manipur, AMAWOVA, along with All Manipur Muslim Educational Society (AMMES), Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO), Manipur and the People's Democratic Movement (PDM), Manipur, jointly organised a convention on the topic "National Convention on Manipur Merger Issue" on October 28 and 29, 1993, at GM Hall, Imphal.
The convention has been a calendar event, and in line with this tradition, the 32rfd National Convention on the Manipur Merger Issue will be organised on October 29, she informed.
COHR chairman Phulindro Konsam, who was also present at the media briefing, said: "When we reflect on the history of Manipur, two significant events, namely, the agreements and orders of September 21 and October 15, 1949, stand out" .
