Parthenium Awareness Week commences

To create awareness about harmful effects of the invasive weed Parthenium to humans as well as plants and animals, observance of the "Parthenium Awareness Week" commenced from Friday at KVK Thoubal with support of the Agriculture Department.
The inaugural function of the observance was attended by Khangabok Part IGP Administrative Committee chairperson Th Subhash, KVK Thoubal farm manager Dr W Jiten and SMS Home Science Rk Lembisana as presidium members.
Farmers of the area also participated in the function.
Delivering the keynote address, Plant Bleeding and Genetics SMS Dr Chuwang Hijam said that Parthenium not only affects plants and animals but also human beings.
To human beings, it causes Eczema, Asthma and Allergies.
Though origin of the plant can be traced to South America and West Indies, it is now present in many parts of the state, he cautioned.
