Training on fruit processing, branding underway

A four-day hands-on training programme focused on fruit processing and branding commenced on Thursday at the Farmers' Training Centre near Sanjenthong, here.
The training organised by the Department of Horticulture and Soil Conservation, is being conducted under the scheme of Value Chain Marketing of Quality Local Horticulture Products Through Brand Building Initiative.
The programme was inaugurated with Department's commissioner Thaithuilung Pamei as the chief guest, director K Debdutta Sharma as the president, and MSME Technology Centre, Imphal deputy director Dr Sinam Yoirentomba as the guest of honour.
Speaking at the event, commissioner Thaithuilung Pamei emphasised the importance of producing and promoting high-quality horticulture and agricultural products capable of competing in the global market, while highlighting the state's potential in this sector on an international scale.
Despite current challenges, Pamei urged collective efforts across community lines to revive the industry and establish Manipur's presence on the global stage.
He stressed the importance of adopting scientific practices in food processing and value addition, taking lessons from developed nations such as Japan and South'Korea, and addressing quality maintenance issues faced within the state.
Calling on the department to educate potential entrepreneurs on national and international market trends, modern technologies, and infrastructure development to advance the sector, he expressed confidence that the training would boost morale of the farmers, entrepreneurs, and improve state's economy.
In his address, director K Debdutta pointed out that approximately 40 per cent of fruit produced in the state is lost due to inadequate infrastructure.
He stated that the training programme aims to teach farmers and entrepreneurs to mitigate these losses by improving food processing and value addition techniques.
Since its inception in 2021, the scheme has provided benefits to 40 entrepreneurs and created direct and indirect employment opportunities for 400 individuals.
He highlighted that the programme covers areas such as food processing, infrastructure development, quality control, packaging, and branding, offering both technical and financial support.
The director further said that over 400 different products have been developed under the scheme, generating a business turnover of Rs 10 crore to date.
Trainees who complete the programme will receive certificates, and the department has plans to offer opportunities for exposure tours in foreign countries for outstanding entrepreneurs, he added.
