Imphal, June 02 2024:
The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has announced a relief measure of Rs 2 lakh as ex gratia for the victims of floods in Assam and Manipur, and Rs 50,000 for those injured.
The floods, triggered by heightened rainfall and cyclonic circulation over Northeast India, have resulted in eight casualties in Assam and four in Manipur since Thursday.
In Manipur, the death toll due to floods has climbed to four as of Saturday.
However, there is a positive indication as the water levels in the Imphal and Nambul rivers have begun to recede, according to state authorities.
A report from the Minister for Water Resources, Awangbow Newmai, indicates that approximately 1.88 lakh individuals have been affected by the floods in Manipur due to incessant rainfall following Cyclone Remal.
Over 24,000 homes have been submerged, leading to the evacuation of 18,103 people, with 56 relief camps established to provide assistance.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati, Assam is expected to witness continued rainfall until June 4 in certain areas.
This weather pattern coincides with the advancement of the southwest monsoon into the remaining parts of the Northeast, including Meghalaya, Tripura, and Assam.
