Handloom Day celebrated, 67 weavers feted

Imphal, August 01 2025: The 26th State Handloom Day was celebrated at the conference hall of the State Central Library, Imphal on Friday.

Handloom Promotion Council, Manipur organised the celebration under the aegis of department of Handloom & Textiles.

A total of 67 weavers from across the state were felicitated with handloom awards that included cash, citations and mementoes in recognition of their contribution to the sector.

Attending the event as chief guest, Handloom & Textiles director Elangbam Jeeten said that the event is held annually to encourage and honour artisans whose handloom and textile products are rooted in the region's cultural heritage, and also represent Manipur globally.

He stressed the importance of the occasion, especially for the weavers of the state and urged the public to extend greater support to them.

Jeeten highlighted the government's initiatives to support the sector, including a yarn subsidy scheme that offers 20 to 30 per cent subsidy on yarn purchases, helping weavers save money and produce more.

While traditional handloom products remain popular locally, he noted that global changes in market trends demand that local weavers strive to participate in international competition.

The function was presided over by national award winning artisan Mayanglambam Radha-mani, with Weaver Service Centre senior officer Beauty Milli attending as guest of honour.
