Imphal, July 23 2025:
Federation of All Tribal Youth Clubs (FATYC), Manipur has urged authorities concerned to reverse the re-classification of tribal residential areas in Imphal West and Imphal East, insisting that they retain their original designation as homestead lands rather than being classified as agricultural lands.
In a press meet held at Manipur Press Club here on Wednesday, FATYC general secretary Hopson Machinao said that since 1970, areas under Dewlahland, Fairyland and other localities were homestead lands but converted into agricultural land, during a computerisation process in 2011 .
Several homestead lands in Ukhrul district and Yaingangpokpi of Imphal East district were also converted into agricultural land, he informed.
He continued that around 600 homestead lands in Imphal East and Imphal West were converted into agricultural lands, prompting the Federation to submit a written application to authorities concerned on the matter.
"But no action has been taken.
The matter is currently lying on the table of the land revenue secretary," he lamented, adding that the Federation's repeated appeals have been ignored, creating serious issues for the people.
Hopson argued that since the aforementioned has been mentioned localities have been classified as agricultural lands and not a homestead land, the banks are not ready to grant loans for such properties.
"It is becoming difficult for the people especially the youth who strive to venture into entrepreneurship and are in need of capital," he explained and appealed to authorities concerned to rectify the land records, allowing the residential lands to remain as homestead lands.
