Imphal, June 23 2025:
The Sana Konung Meira Paibi Lup (SKMPL) has urged all devotees and participants of the Govindaji Rath Yatra (Kang) festival to refrain from using intoxicants, warning that any untoward incident arising from non-compliance will be the sole responsibility of the individuals concerned.
In the run-up to the Kang festival scheduled for June 27, a joint social service camp was conducted in and around the Shri Shri Govindaji Temple by the SKMPL and Palace Compound Youth Welfare Club (PCYWC) .
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the camp, SKMPL general secretary Yumnam Ibeyaima expressed concern over the irresponsible disposal of waste by devotees visiting the temple, a heritage site.
She said it is unfortunate that worshippers are often seen littering plastic bags, bottles, and food waste in the temple complex.
Stressing the importance of maintaining cleanliness, she said the temple and its surroundings play a key role in mirroring Manipur to the outside world.
She also urged authorities concerned to address the issue of garbage dumping along the roadsides in and around the Sana Konung area.
PCYWC president Toijam Rajendro also spoke to the media, noting the recent rise in COVID-19 cases.
He said the Kang festival may be observed in a subdued manner this year, possibly only symbolically.
However, he assured that necessary security arrangements will be made to ensure the festival is conducted safely and is not missed
altogether.
