Imphal, November 14 2024:
Ningols United Progressive Initiative (NUPI) organised a candlelight vigil at Palika Bazar, New Delhi on Wednesday, denouncing the recent terrorist attacks that claimed the lives of two elderly Meetei men and subsequent abduction of six civilians from the same family - three women and three minors.
In a statement, NUPI informed that the abducted civilians, including three children aged 8 months to 8 years, were among people from the Meetei community displaced from their homes in June and had been residing near the CRPF camp in Jakuradhor and the Borobekra police station.
Decrying the acts of attacking and abducting innocent civilians as barbaric and cowardly, and total disregard for human life, the organisation stressed that this brutal act was not only a flagrant violation of human rights but also an egregious assault on helpless women and children.
It also particularly described the abduction of minors as a crime that has deeply troubled the national conscience.
NUPI also called for immediate and decisive action by the Central government and state leaders for safe return of the abducted victims to their families.
Prodding conscience of the abductors, the organisation urged for safe release of the innocent civilians on humanitarian grounds.
Since the violence erupted on May 3, 2023, instigated by cross-border Kuki militants, the situation in Manipur has remained unstable, posing significant threats to the safety and well-being of civilians, it rued.
The candlelight vigil concluded with a unified call for action, while urging all concerned to stand against violence and terrorism to bring peace and justice to Manipur, the statement added.
