Jiribam, July 12 2024:
Residents of Lalpani village, comprising Meetei and Meitei Pangal communities, are living in fear following firing towards Mongbung Meetei village by Kuki militants from the nearby Mongbung and Seijang Kuki villages on Tuesday.
The firing hit roofs of many houses in Lalpani village too, causing panic and distress among the villagers, especially children.
A Meitei Pangal resident of Lalpani reported that while no threat, verbally or otherwise, has been received, the villagers feel highly insecure consequently forcing women and children to seek refuge with relatives and friends in other villages during the night, while the men stay behind to guard their homes.
The tension heightened on Thursday night when villagers heard gunshots but could not determine their origin.
The situation in Jiribam has been tense since violence erupted in the district on June 6, following the murder of a Meetei farmer by Kuki militants.
