Bishnupur, July 08 2025:
Under the initiative of MP Dr Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, who also serves as the chairperson of the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA), committee member and JNU professor Dr Khagem-bam Romesh conducted an inspection of government schools in the Kumbi assembly constituency on Tuesday.
The inspection covered primary to high school level educational institutions.
During the visit, Dr Romesh assessed the overall condition of the institutions, identified infrastructural and resource shortages, and gathered first-hand reports on their current state.
Speaking to reporters, Dr Romesh confided that several concerning issues were observed in government schools across the assembly constituency.
In some primary schools, there were neither students nor teachers present, while in others, regular teachers were absent and had unauthorised substitutes in their place.
Surprisingly, some schools without teachers and students had newly constructed toilet facilities.
Dr Romesh further highlighted that Kumbi Santhong Upper Primary School was operating beyond its capacity, with a large number of students.
Due to space constraints, students of three classes were found taught at the Laibung community hall located within the school campus.
The school headmaster Khangembam Indraku-mar, shared that Bishnupur ZEO Zone IV Atom Gu-namani Devi had provided desks and benches for the students.
He also informed that despite the large number of students in the school, the infrastructure remains pathetic in addition to the shortage of teachers.
Romesh further stated that Kumbi Santhong Upper Primary School currently has a total enrolment of 642 students.
Due to a severe shortage of government-appointed teachers, five unofficially engaged individuals are presently handling the teaching responsibilities.
He added that a special boarding facility for slow learners has been maintained for the past five years, with dedicated instructors hired specifically for this purpose.
Despite limited government provisions for the mid-day meal scheme, the headmaster has taken personal responsibility to ensure that students receive meals daily by supplementing the shortfall from his own resources.
A similar shortage of teaching staff was also observed at Kumbi Adras Government Primary School, where only two teachers were found managing all students, Dr Romesh said.
He added that a detailed report of the findings from the inspection visit will be submitted to the deputy commissioner on July 11 and 12 .
The schools inspected during Tuesday's visit included Kumbi Thingel Leikai Primary School, Abhiram Primary School, Kumbi Setupur Primary School and Ithai Khunou Government High School.
