Newborn dropped at cradle point

Imphal, July 02 2025:
A baby girl was found abandoned at a cradle point set up near the gate of Manipur Mahila Kalyan Samiti (MMKS) Children's Home, Dewlahland, Imphal East on Wednesday afternoon.
According to a report from the Social Welfare Department, the baby was spotted in the cradle around 2.30 pm .
On being informed, a team of District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), Imphal East, led by protection officer Devavrata Sharma, initiated due process.
Tbe child was promptly shifted to the emergency ward of JNIMS fof life-saving medical care.
The matter was also reported to Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Specialised Adoption Agency (SAA), and the police station concerned.
The condition of the baby is being closely monitored at JNIMS hospital.
According to an official of the Social Welfare Department, every cradle point is equipped with an alarm bell, designed to alert nearby staff to ensure timely medical care and safety of any abandoned baby.
On Wednesday, the alarm bell rang shortly after the baby was placed at the cradle point, alerting MMKS counsellor Ningthoujam Nomita Devi who promptly picked up the baby.
Later, DCPU, Imphal East and SSA Imphal East staff transported the infant to JNIMS Hospital.
After arriving at the hospital around 3.17 pm, the baby was assessed and placed at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the Institute for observation.
The official further informed that the newborn baby girl seems to be only 2-3 days old.
One of her hands shows some signs of deformity, which may have led to her "parents" abandoning her, the official opined.
