Imphal, September 28 2024:
Apunba Manipur Kanba Ima Lup (AMKIL) president Lourembam Nganbi has condemned organisations that have come out to protect Manipur turning against its own people and creating animosity between ourselves, while appealing for not to repeat such action again.
Addressing a press conference held at Manipur Press Club Thangjing Hall on Saturday, Nganbi rued that it is very unfortunate that a youth from Huikap, Imphal East district was allegedly abducted and beaten by Meitei Lipun for sharing a message on social media.
Emphasising that the victim is a patriot who has been working for the welfare of Manipur, she decried that they will not accept such high-handedness just for sharing views against the government.
Nganbi continued that they had been supporting Meitei Lipun believing that it was an organisation which stands for Manipur, but they never thought the organisation will indulge in such heinous act.
She said that Meitei Lipun should never suppress the constitutional rights of a citizen, while asserting that it will back all organisations that will protect Meetei community and Manipur's integrity.
She reiterated that they will not tolerate any action that may create animosity within the community, by any organisation that have taken up arms to protect Manipur.
Meanwhile, Jos Chongtham, the victim, alleged that he was abducted by some armed people, who identified themselves as members of Meitei Lipun at around 10:50 am on Friday from his home for forwarding a photo and text on WhatsApp.
He was taken to a house and was kept in a room tied up.
He was forced to unlock his phone and his call logs as well as WhatsApp chats were reviewed by them.
He was then coerced to film a video where he admitted that the anti-government information in relation to the message forwarded by him was provided to him by RK Nimai, Thounaojam Brinda, Yambem Laba and Malem Ningthouja.
He was also made to say that he now fully understands the initiative of 'War on Drugs' taken up by chief minister N Biren led government and in future he will never share such messages or posts, he claimed.
Jos also said that after the video was shot he was then hit with a stick 14-15 times and was told that he was spared from more severe punishment as he had supported Meeteis in his social media posts.
He was later set free and handed over to his father at around 6 pm on the same day.
He decried the abduction, threat and physical assault just for forwarding a WhatsApp message which was not originally written by him while terming the incident as gross violation of his right.
He appealed to all concerned to refrain from resorting to such acts in future to anybody.
