Time for elected representatives to openly stand up for people: Sanayaima

United National Liberation Front (UNLF) former chairman Ningthemcha Sanayaima has stated that the time has come for elected representatives to stand up openly for the people amid the prevailing situation in Manipur.
He was speaking at the observance of the 7th death anniversary of UNLF-MPA chief of army staff and vice-chairman Ayekpam Wangpa alias Tomba, held at Ima Thongak Lairembi, Langol on Saturday.
Organised by Ayekpam Wangpa Memorial Trust, the observance featured the unveiling of a bust of Ayekpam Wangpa by Sanayaima.
Floral tributes were offered on the occasion, which was attended by members from various sections of society.
The event was also attended by Pambei-led UNLF chief of army staff Kh Khomba, Ayekpam Wangpa Memorial Trust advisor Ayekpam Anandi, and chairman Y Nabachandra as presidium members.
Sanayaima said that the current state of affairs in Manipur is highly unfortunate, with people fighting amongst themselves.
He stressed the need to understand the issue deeply and said that the time has come to decide how to build long-term unity.
The most important task is to ensure that all indigenous communities of the land live in harmony and with dignity.
There is no path other than aligning our ideals and striving for self-dependence, he said.
Failing to do so will lead to our own destruction.
He urged everyone to forget the past and work together for a better future.
He further remained that while elected representatives might.be apprehensive about acting for the people, the time has come for them to step up openly.
Remembering Wangpa, Sanayaima said that he was a great leader whose demise was a huge loss for the land.
He urged the younger generation to follow in Wangpa's footsteps and work towards progress in society.
It may be mentioned that Ayekpam Wangpa joined UNLF in early 1975.He served as chief of army staff of MPA from 1997 to 2014 and vice-chairman from 2014 to 2017 .
He passed away on June 28, 2017 .
