Senapati, October 27 2024:
Following the passing away of its chief K Tailu, R Benjamin, nephew of the late chief, was announced as the new village chief on Saturday by Taphou Naga Baptist Church pastor reverend K Daniel, acting as the administrator.
Village elders, A Solomon, expressed joy at having a young and dynamic leader for the village as A John emphasised the significance of the village chief in a Naga village, referencing the Old Testament where righteous kings prospered under God's favour, while unrighteous kings faced consequences.
Traditionally, before taking on the role, a chief would be dedicated to God, as was done in this ceremony under the guidance of the reverend.
Historically, Nagas have upheld hereditary leadership roles across different tribes, even before the advent of Christianity, a practice still observed by the Maram tribe.
After being anointed, the new chief customarily hosts a communal feast to seek blessings for his leadership.
The newly elected chief, R Benjamin, son of K Raichapii, expressed gratitude to those who attended his coronation and sought their blessings as he assumed his hew responsibilities.
The event was attended by chiefs from neighbouring villages, villagers, and other guests.
