Discourse sets guidelines for Lai Haraoba

Kanglei Indigenous Martial Arts and Cultural Society (KIMACS) organised a discussion programme on traditional song, dance and costumes associated with Umang Lai Haoraoba (festival/rituals of sylvan deities) at the Government Dance & Music College on July 20.In a release, KIMACS secretary Rk Leninsana informed that the discourse adopted resolutions related to traditional dance, songs, and costumes associated with Umang Lai Haraoba with those present emphasising the need to preserve the cultural integrity of the festival through restriction on unrelated songs and dances that could degrade the social fabric.

It also imposed ban on non-cultural dance at Umang Lai Haraoba, and prohibited performances on songs, dances, or costumes of other indigenous communities (Mao, Kabui, Maring, etc.) that do not conform to traditional norms and practices.
The release further specified that traditional costumes should not be modified arbitrarily; only those who completed traditional dance courses at a recognised institute or under a qualified teacher shall impart dance lessons to local and village artistes in preparation for Umang Lai Haraoba; priests, priestesses and pena artistes from approved institutions (Loishang) must be present at the venue of dance performances and conduct the closing rituals as per the prescribed norms; ensure protection and authenticity of traditional dance and music; and to conduct meetings with local or village committees.
The discussion programme was attended by Uttra Shanglen Sana Konung 'maichou atomba' Dr Th Radhamohan, Pandit Loishang's Ng Khomba Singh, Umang Lai 'shanglakpa' Konsam Tomchou, JN Manipur Dance Academy guru and Mao Council former vice president RH Daikho Mao, All Zeliangrong Art and Culture Organisation (AZACO) president K Kumar Kabui, State Kala Akademi awardee Laishram Sharat Singh, dance instructor Arambam Prafulo, and Laininghthou Sanamahi Temple Board Loishang members with JN Manipur Dance Academy retired pradhan guru Nganthem Ranjit as the moderator.
More than 60 dance teachers involved in imparting lessons on traditional dances at 'Laibung' also attended the discussion.
