MPhil/PhD degree of CMJ varsity under scanner

The Department of Higher & Technical Education has directed ail government/government aided college teachers possessing MPhil/PhD degree or both to submit their certificates/documents to the director (University & Higher Education), Manipur through their principals within July 10, 2025 .
It also directed all teachers of Dhanamanjuri University (DMU) and Manipur Technical University (MTU) to submit their certificates to the registrars concerned by July 10 .
According to a notification issued by joint secretary (Hr & Tech Edn) Laishram Dolie Devi, the Department had intimated the director to screen all MPhil/PhD Degrees of teachers in all government/ government aided colleges consequent upon the Supreme Court judgement dated March 31, 2014 dissolving the Chandra Mohan Jha University (CMJ), regarding validity of MPhil/PhD Degree obtained from CMJ University, Meghalaya.
In furtherance, the director had issued letters and notifications requesting all principals of government/government aided colleges to submit details of teachers who have obtained MPhil/PhD Degree from CMJ University, Meghalaya.
The release disclosed about reports suggesting possibility of possession of fake/forged certificates of legitimate and good universities.
Thus, there is an urgent necessity to verify the certificates of MPhil/PhD of all government/government aided college teachers including teachers under DMU & MTU, irrespective of whether the certificate has been issued by CMJ University, Meghalaya or from any other university and deemed universities in India from the Education Department, Meghalaya or from the state governments/universities concerned.
The notification/direction is also applicable to those teachers who had earlier utilised their MPhil/PhD degree certificates awarded by CMJ University, Meghalaya or any other university and deemed universities in India for upgrade to assistant professor, final absorption, placement under Career Advancement Scheme (CAS), promotion, Advance Increment, etc.
Teachers who fail to submit the specified degree within the stipulated timeline will be considered that either they do not possess an MPhil/PhD or that their certificates of MPhil/PhD are fake or forged.
Consequently, all benefits and privileges extended earlier on the basis of holding MPhil/PhD degree shall be withdrawn/ cancelled with immediate effect without further notice on the expiry of the stipulated timeframe mentioned herein above, the release informed.
