Noney, August 16 2024:
An old tanker driver, identified as Vijay Tamang, 40, from Charhajare in Kangpokpi district, is feared drowned in the Barak River at Sibilong Village, Tamenglong district on Thursday after he fell into the river around 10:30 am.
Tamang was resting on the riverbank with the entire convoy, which was on its way from Jiribam to Imphal.
Upon learning of the incident, a combined search and rescue effort was immediately launched by the Tamenglong police stationed at Sibilong, CRPF at Barak, and villagers from Sibilong and Puiluanh (Kambiron).
In the evening, the Rongmei Naga Students' Organisation Manipur (RNSOM), led by president Daichui Gangmei and RNCM vice-president Athan Rongmei, along with the Driver's Union Oinamlong, joined the search.
The operation is currently in full swing, with reinforcements from the Tamenglong Police, led by additional SP Josiah Pamei, and local volunteers using wooden boats.
However, strong river currents and high water levels are making the search challenging.
The NDRF/SDRF team has not yet arrived to assist.
