Imphal, August 11 2024:
Asserting that the future of Meetei community will be at risk if the state government fails to submit necessary reports for inclusion of the Meeteis in the ST list by 2025, World Meitei Council (WMC) has submitted a memorandum to the chief minister urging for immediately submission of necessary report to the centre.
In the memorandum, WMC highlighted that the people of Manipur have been urging the chief minister for the past eight years to submit relevant reports to the central government for the inclusion of the Meeteis in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) list.
The doubt of chief minister that the "Naga community would be affected if Meeteis are included in the ST list" has also been cleared by the SC judgment wherein it assured for providing 'quota within quota'.
The memorandum also urged the chief minister to avoid linking the current crisis to the ST demand.
It emphasised the urgency of ensuring that the Meeteis are included in the ST list before the 2026 delimitation process, while warning that failing to do so could jeopardise the future of the Meetei community and potentially lead to its extinction.
The WMC urged the chief minister to send the necessary reports to the central government by 2025.Additionally, the memorandum called on the chief minister to declare the status of the Meetei community during the ongoing assembly session to safeguard the community's future through its inclusion in the ST list.
