Sit-ins protest arrest of Village Volunteers

Imphal, March 11 2025:
Sit-in protests against attempts to disintegrate Manipur and arrest of volunteers continued in different parts of the state on Tuesday.
During the demonstration, protesters held placards inscribed "Village Volunteers cannot be arrested", "Measures for return of displaced persons to their homes should be taken", "Don't kill innocent people through proxy war", "Ensure fundamental rights to citizens" and "Stop Human Rights Violations," among others.
Meira Paibi activists from Langthabal Phuramakhong, Makha Leikai, Awang Leikai, and Mayai Leikai staged sit-in protests against the arrest of village volunteers and asked the government to forego divide-and-rule policy in Manipur.

Womenfolk also staged demonstration at Khonghampat Awang Leikai community hall demanding immediate halt to arrest of village volunteers.
On the sidelines of the sit-in, meira activists contended that failure by the government of India to contain the armed Kuki militants is akin to emboldening neighbouring countries challenge India.
They also pointed out that Meeteis surrendered their arms in response to an appeal by the Governor.
However, Kukis are yet to surrender arms and are insisting that on their demand for a separate administration.
While the Meeteis have respected the central government's decision, the Kukis have defied the appeal, thereby creating sense of insecurity among the Meeteis.
Apunba Nupi Khunai Lamjing Meira Lup Thoubal, (Nupi Khunai-2) also organised sit-in protest at Nongpok Sekmai Shikhong Bazar in Thoubal district on Tuesday and demanded that village volunteers should not be arrested.
Sit-in protests were also held at Kakwa Asem Leikai, Sorokhaibam Leikai, Pishum market, Keishamthong market, Haobam Marak Irom Leikai and Yaiskul.
