Sit-in staged in Assam demanding MAC

Jiribam, July 10 2025: A sit in protest was organised by Manipuri Autonomous Council Demand Coordination Committee, Assam near the Khudi ram Bose statue, Silchar, on Thursday demanding the Assam government to grant Manipuri Autonomous Council (MAC) for Manipuris living in the state.

Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of the sit-in, Committee chairman Santikumar reasoned that as Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sharma had been frequently claiming of striving for the welfare of Manipuris residents of Assam, the chief minister should facilitate formation of Manipuri Autonomous Council at the earliest.

Santikumar emphasised that for the Assam Manipuri community, which does not have any representative, Manipuri Autonomous Council is the only way for preserving heritage, tradition, culture and identity.

At the end of the protest, the participants chanted slogans such as 'We want Manipuri Autonomous Council, it is our constitutional right', 'Grant Manipuri Autonomous Council at the earliest', etc .
