Senapati, August 07 2025:
Three buffaloes were electrocuted at Koide Biisho after coming into contact with low-hanging high tension (HT) power wires.
The incident occurred around 1 pm on Wednesday at the Vouzhe hill range, which belongs to the Vouzhe Cattle Rearing Group (Vouzhe Hakho Me).
The incident came to light when a youth tending to the cattle heard an unusual sound from the herd and discovered three buffaloes had been electrocuted, while most of the herd sustained electric shocks from the live HT wires hanging just above ground level.
The death of the buffaloes has caused a huge loss to the poor farmers, whose sole source of income depends on rearing cattle.
Villagers said that of the three, one buffalo, aged about six years, weighed around 350 kg and was worth about Rs 1 lakh; another, aged about one year, weighed about 100 kg and was valued at around Rs 30,000; and the third, aged about four years, weighed about 250 kg and was worth about Rs 75,000 .
Villagers further said that the incident happened due to negligence on the part of the power department, which had failed to conduct regular checks on the lines between Maram and Purul.
They added that the department had not carried out any repairs for more than 10 years to date.
Similar electrocution incidents involving cattle, as well as humans, have been reported in the past in the area due to the department's carelessness.
Sources said that there are still many electric poles at risk of collapsing and many transformers remain unguarded, which could further endanger human lives and livestock if immediate measures are not taken.
