Former ADC leader urges for ADC election

Imphal, August 01 2025: Former vice-chairman of Autonomous District Council (ADC), Senapati, LK Kasaso Laii has appealed to the state government to conduct the long-delayed ADC election, stating that development in Manipur's hill areas cannot move forward without a functioning local body.

In a press statement issued Thursday, the former ADC leader recalled that the first ADC election in the state was held in 1973 but subsequently was halted after hill leaders launched a protest and bandh in 1994 with the slogan "No 6th Schedule, No ADC election".

The Centre subsequently threatened to withhold funding for hill areas unless elections were conducted, leading to fresh polls in 2010 .

The term of the 6th ADC ended in 2020 .

He noted that despite assurances from the government that the 7th ADC election would be conducted promptly, more than four years have lapsed.

Stating that ADC is the primary governing body for the hill areas, he asserted that inclusive development in Manipur will remain incomplete without its proper functioning.

While political leaders continue to stress inclusive growth in both hills and valley, meaningful development will not be achieved in the hills until the councils are restored.

He urged the state government to resolve the current crisis at the earliest and conduct the ADC election without further delay, calling on all stakeholders to work together for a peaceful and inclusive Manipur.
