Senapati, June 27 2024:
All Manipur Christian Organisation (AMCO) has petitioned President Droupadi Murmu to protect the minority Christians and rebuild churches vandalised in the Meetei-Kuki violence.
In the memorandum, AMCO reminded that a similar petition was also submitted to Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey on May 18, 2023 .
While acknowledging the efforts of both state and central governments for restoration of peace and normalcy in the turbulent state, AMCO maintained that total cleansing and obliteration of the Meetei Christian community by radical anti-Christian mobs on the pretext of the communal conflict is most confusing and a cause for concern.
Since the mayhem, more than 360 churches have either been razed to the ground, demolished or vandalised of which 249 churches belonged to Meetei minority Christian community, the memorandum pointed out, while demanding to book perpetrators of such crimes.
AMCO further appealed to the President-to take immediate action for rebuilding the places of worship and added that reconstruction of those churches will not only serve as a symbol of resilience but also reaffirm the commitment to diversity and harmony.
