Teachers sensitised on POCSO Act, child trafficking

Jiribam, February 23 2025:
Jiribam district administration in association with District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), Jiribam organised a one-day sensitisation programme for government school teachers on 'POCSO Act, 2012' and 'Combating Child Trafficking' on Sunday.
Jiribam SDO Laishram Roshan, SDC Yumlembam Sanathoi, CWC, Jiribam chairperson Mutum Maipaksana and ZEO Thoudam Amurashi attended the programme, held at Sorok Atinbi Hilghat community hall, as dignitaries on dais.
Addressing the gathering, Laishram Roshan said that Manipur, being a state sharing international border with Myanmar, is vulnerable to child and human trafficking with high possibilities of unreported cases of child trafficking in the state post May 3, 2023 amid the current unrest.

Poor financial background is one of the factors of somebody becoming victim of trafficking, with school dropouts often the target of choice for such illegal operation, he said.
The SDO also shed light on sexual trafficking and labour trafficking as the main types of human trafficking.
Jiribam, being a district affected by the crisis and having common boundary with other states, is a potential hub of human trafficking and people of the district need to remain alert from such activities, he added.
In the technical session, DCPU, Jiribam child protection officer Phurailatpam Devabrata Sharma spoke on POCSO Act, 2012, while State Child.
Protection Society (SCPS) programme officer Mala Lisham delved on 'Combating Child Trafficking' as resource persons.
Later, an open house discussion was held as part of the programme.
