MU observes World Anthropology Day

The Department of Anthropology, Manipur University, observed World Anthropology Day 2025 under the theme Celebrate, Engage and Inspire' on Thursday.
The event featured an outreach programme for school students and an exhibition showcasing various aspects of Anthropology.
Informing this, a statement issued by the department of anthropology said that the observance began with an address by vice-chancellor Prof N Lokendra, alongside the head of the department and faculty members, highlighting the significance of anthropology and the importance of observing the day.
Attended by over a thousand participants, including invitees, students, and faculty members from different university departments, the event aims to promote awareness about the discipline.
As part of the outreach programme, students of 10th standard from Premier English Academy, Canchipur, led by their teachers, participated in the event.
The exhibition featured stalls dedicated to the three primary branches of anthropology - biological, social, and prehistoric archaeology.
A major attraction was the department's museum, along with an exhibition of human skeletons, prehistoric tools, and implements, which sparked curiosity among attendees.
Basic biological investigations such as blood group tests, blood pressure, blood glucose, body mass index (BMI), and body fat percentage measurements were offered free of cost to guests.
Visitors also explored displays of material culture and traditions of various ethnic groups in Manipur.
Additionally, miscellaneous stalls selling food, crafts, and other local goods were set up.
The event was aimed at inspiring the young minds and foster an understanding of anthropology's relevance in India, particularly in bridging the gap between modern and traditional societies.
The discipline's role in culturally sensitive approaches to healthcare, education, conservation, and social welfare was also highlighted, the statement added.
