MUC, MU observe National Anti-Ragging Day

Manipur University of Culture (MUC) observed the National Anti-Ragging Day along with launching observance of Anti-Ragging Week at the extension campus of the varsity in Canchipur on Monday.
The event was attended by MUC vice chancellor Prof Paonam Gunindro as chief guest, and Anti Ragging Cell chairperson Dr Ng Nganbi Chanu as president while registrar Laishram Radhakanta and deputy registrar Dr Lourembam Surjit were present as guests of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Gunindro informed that out of the 1074 universities in the country, 460 are state universities, with only three varsities including MUC focused on culture.
He pointed out while other parts of the country have ragging issues, no such problem has been detected in Manipur.
MUC is an institution which pays huge importance to decorum and respect and as such, students are respectful towards their teachers and seniors, opined the vice chancellor.
On the other hand, Anti Ragging Committee (ARC), Manipur University observed 'Anti-Ragging Day 2024' at the Senate Hall of Department of Earth Science on Monday.
The observance was attended by Manipur University vice chancellor Prof N Lokendra as chief guest, proctor and ARC member Prof Maibam Bidyananda as president and Students' Welfare dean Prof Moirangthem Premjit as guest of honour.
In his speech, Prof Lokendra said that while ragging is prominent in other states, universities and higher institutions in northeast do not have any such issue.
In 2022, 832 ragging complaints were registered in Uttar Pradesh, while Madhya Pradesh registered 666 complaints.
The Supreme Court had ruled that ragging is illegal and the University Grants Commission had seen to the formation of Anti-Ragging Committee or Cell in varsities, which is commemorated as National Anti-Ragging Day every year on August 12, he explained.
As part of the observance, a poster photo 'Let's Make a Ragging Free Campus', was released.
