Imphal, July 05 2024:
In an effort to protect the environment and maintain ecological balance, Coordinating Committee of Nongpok Sanjenbam has imposed ban on tree cutting, stone quarrying and hunting activities in areas covered by Nongpok Sanjenbam Nongmaiching Reserved Forest and Chingkhei Hill, with immediate effect.
In a statement, committee president Y Biren, expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of the Nongmaiching reserved forest and Chingkhei hill range, which hold historical significance for Manipur.
Over time, these hill ranges in Imphal East district have been subjected to serious deforestation due to jhum cultivation and poppy plantation by Kuki communities.
Additionally, there has been exploitation by unscrupulous businessmen engaged in land and stone quarrying activities, causing further destruction to the environment.
Declaring that any untoward incidents arising of non-compliance with the imposition of ban shall be responsibility of the violators, the Committee urged all concerned to seek its permission before undertaking any developmental activities in Nongmaiching area.
