Candidates seek postponement of AWAS board election

Imphal, July 04 2024: Eight candidates contesting the election for the Board of Directors of Manipur Apex Handloom Weavers and Handicraft Artisans' Cooperative Society Limited (AWAS) have requested that the election, scheduled for July 5, be postponed due to the flood situation in the state.

Addressing media persons at her Soibam Leikai residence, on Thursday, Ph Indira, one of the candidates, on behalf of the eight, informed that a written request to postpone the election for seven AWAS board members had already been submitted to the Cooperative Societies commissioner, registrar and managing director of AWAS.

The request, signed by eight out of the fifteen candidates, cited inability of voters to leave their homes due to the flood conditions.

She further stated that holding the election as scheduled on July 5 would prevent voters from exercising their rights and also appealed to the remaining candidates to join in urging the authorities to postpone the election.
