Imphal, October 31 2024:
The United Naga Council (UNC) has expressed shock and condemnation over a recent statement made by the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), which it said disrespects the sentiment of the Liangmai Naga community during the celebration of the Chaga-Ngee Festival.
This festival, celebrated annually post-harvest, holds deep cultural and historical significance for the Liangmai people, who have preserved the tradition as part of their heritage for generations.
In a press statement, UNC expressed dismay at what it termed an "outrageous" statement by CoTU, which referred to Liangmai ancestral lands as Kuki areas.
According to the UNC, such a claim disrupts the sanctity of the Liangmai community's festivity and undermines the traditional bond they share with their land, culture, and stories.
UNC emphasised that Manipur, home to diverse communities with different sets of festivals and cultural practices, has long benefited from mutual respect among its people.
This respect has fostered social harmony and peaceful coexistence across the state, UNC said while stressing the need for preserving this tradition despite present challenges.
UNC stated that it would not tolerate any attempts to challenge or displace Naga communities from their ancestral lands.
It urged all communities to honour each other's history and traditions, reiterating that mutual respect is crucial to maintaining peace and cordial relations among the various groups in Manipur.
UNC also extended best wishes for peace and prosperity to the Liangmai Naga community during their Chaga-Ngee festival celebrations.
