Imphal, May 30 2025:
North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) has strongly condemned the recent mob attack on a North-East shop-owner in Vijay Nagar area of Delhi's North Campus, calling it a blatant act of racism and demanding immediate legal action against the culprits.
In a statement, NEFIS stated that the victim was brutally assaulted in front of his family by a group of miscreams over alleged dietary habits, which the forum termed as "false claims".
The assailants reportedly shouted hateful and communal slogans during the assault, which left the shop-owner in need of medical treatment.
"This disturbing episode reflects the increasing trend of mob vigilantism in the capital, which persists due to the lack of effective legal deterrents," NEFIS said, pointing out that such incidents were part of a broader pattern of discrimination and violence faced by people from the North-East, including verbal and physical abuse, racism, and sexual harassment, especially targeting women.
Raising concerns over police inaction in the case, the Forum claimed that despite the attackers openly threatening North-East students living in rented accommodations, no arrests had been made.
Instead, a case was reportedly filed against the victim himself, which the forum condemned as a clear example of police complicity.
The student and rights organisation demanded immediate arrest of the attackers and withdrawal of any fabricated charges against the victim, while urging the authorities to implement strong preventive measures to ensure the safety and dignity of North-East residents in Delhi.
Calling for an end to racism and communal targeting, NEFIS emphasised the need for accountability within law enforcement and the urgent necessity of protecting migrant communities from such acts of intimidation.
