RIMS, SBM, IIIT-M, MU celebrate Constitution Day

Constitution Day 2024 was celebrated by different organisations in the state, with institutions and organisations holding special programmes to honour the adoption of the Indian Constitution on November 26, 1949.At the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, the celebration began with reading of the Preamble led by medical superintendent Prof N Sanjib Singh.
Faculty members, officials, and other attendees collectively reaffirmed to uphold constitutional values of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity.
In his address, Prof Sanjib underscored the importance of remembering principles of the Constitution in daily life, particularly in the realms of healthcare, education, and governance.
The programme was also participated by deputy director (administration), principals of Dental College and College of Nursing, chief accounts officer, and other staff members, showcasing a collective dedication to upholding constitutional ideals, informed a statement issued by RIMS media cell.
Meanwhile, Seva Bharati Manipur (SBM) commemorated the day with a programme at its Boudhik Hall, Nagamapal during which advocate Saikhom Kaminikumar Singh delivered a lecture on the origins and significance of the Constitution as the resource person.
He detailed the drafting process led by the constituent assembly under the leadership of Dr BR Ambedkar, recounted its adoption on November 26, 1949, and enforcement on January 26, 1950, which marked the birth of the Republic of India, an SBM statement said.
Karpinikumar emphasised that the Constitution not only shapes the nation's legal framework but also binds its people through shared values and principles.
He called upon all citizens to honour and abide by the Constitution to ensure unity and integrity of the nation.
The event was also attended by SBM president Aribam Brajakumar Sharma and RSS Manipur 'prant karyavah' S Tarunkumar Sharma.
Indian Institute of Information Technology, Manipur (IIIT, Manipur) also celebrated 75th anniversary of Constitution Day along with Janjatiya Gaurav Divas at its Mantripukhri campus on Tuesday.
The Janjatiya Gaurav Divas celebrating 150th birth anniversary year of Bhagwan Birsa Munda was held in the morning with IIIT-Manipur director Prof Krishnan Baskar presiding over the event in the presence of Akhil Bharatiya Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram 'pramukh' Arvind Kulkarni as chief guest and public health professional Dr Shanoo Mishra as guest of honour.
In his address, Arvind Kulkarni highlighted the contribution made by tribal freedom fighters from across the country, such as Rani Gaidinliu, and Haipu Jadonang of Manipur and Tilka Manjhi of Bihar.
The event concluded with the prize distribution ceremony for the sketch competition on tribal leaders.
The institute also observed Constitution Day in the evening With Prof Krishnan Baskar as president, Manipur Judicial Academy (MJA) director justice Kh Nobin Singh and Tamil Nadu Director General of Police Satish Kumar Dogra as the guests of honour.
Justice Nobin emphasised that laws are framed for the people while expressing concern over lack of awareness on the existing laws by the public apart from questioning the inability to resolve certain issues in our society.
The programme concluded with distribution of prizes to winners of volleyball, sketch competition, quiz, debating and chess competitions The National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell of Manipur University also observed Coristitution Day alongside Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas by organising a national seminar titled "75 Years of Constitutional Evolution: Issues & Challenges" at the University Court Hall on Tuesday.
The event was attended by MU registrar W Chandbabu, head of law department Dr Y Premananda, dean of school of social sciences Prof Thangjam Purnima, NSS Cell programme coordinator Dr Laishram Santosh, and Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas in-charge Dr Chungmeijai Mathew MK as presidium members.
In his address, Dr Y Premananda noted disconnect between the Constitutional ideals of equality and justice and the reality in Manipur, pointing out that, while the Constitution provides a framework for equality and liberty, the situation in Manipur remains far from ideal.
One cannot even move freely for 15 kilometres within the state, he stated, and emphasised the need to reaffirm constitutional values, ensuring that citizens' rights to freedom of thought, expression, belief, faith, and worship are fully upheld.
He further called on the government to ensure that every citizen in the state enjoys these constitutional guarantees.
