Imphal, July 26 2025:
The pen-down strike launched by 603 government lecturers under the banner of Lecturers' Association Manipur (LAM) 2018 batch has been extended until August 2 following a breakdown in negotiations with the government regarding their demand for completion of the pending regularisation process.
The strike which commenced on July 19 was earlier scheduled to conclude on July 26 .
LAM general secretary I Malemnganbi made the announcement during a press meet held on Saturday at Old Lambulane, stating that the lecturers have resolved not to accept the government's interim arrangement to pay them at contractual rates.

She, however, conveyed the lecturers' readiness to call off the strike immediately once the government implemented their full regularisation and regular pay as per their entitlements.
The lecturers were initially appointed as contract lecturers in Government Higher Secondary Schools in 2019 and were later regularised through a cabinet decision on January 8,2022.According to the regularisation order, they were to begin receiving regular pay from April 1, 2023 .
However, more than three years after the order, the process remains incomplete, and the lecturers continue to receive contractual wages.
Malemnganbi said that despite the hardships, the lecturers had refrained from any protest for a long time and continued performing their duties for the welfare of students.
Some among them, who are currently displaced and living in relief camps, are still fulfilling their teaching responsibilities.
She said that many lecturers are struggling to support their families yet have remained committed to students, who are the future of society.
She added that three lecturers and one regular staff member from among them had passed away without receiving any of the benefits of regular employment.
Appealing to the authorities concerned, LAM urged the government to consider the plight of the lecturers and expedite the regularisation process to ensure they receive their rightful salaries.
