Mother kills daughter, attempts suicide

Thoubal, February 23 2025: A 30-year-old worn an killed her 5.4-year-old daughter before attempting to take her own life by stabbing herself.

According to reports, the accused, identified as Chingtham ongbi Priyadarshini (30), w/o Chingtham Premjit of Khongjom Chingtham Maning Leikai slit her daughter's throat around 6 am Sunday.

Her husband, an Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force (ITBPF) trooper, is currently stationed in Afghanistan.

Sources revealed that Priyadarshini had been experiencing bouts of nightmares in the past few days and was keeping a knife under her pillow before sleeping.

Her mother stayed with her and was present on Saturday night when Priyadarshini performed certain rituals at home.

On Sunday morning, after waking up Priyadarshini, the mother left for her house next door.

Shortly afterward, family members heard loud screams from Priyadarshini's room.

Upon rushing inside, they discovered the child lying in on the bed with her throat slit, and Priyadarshini standing beside her.

While most family members were left stunned, Priyadarshini's brother-in-law rushed in, picked up the injured child, and attempted to take her to the hospital even as Priyadarshini in a seemingly deranged state ran outside, shouting that she had committed the act and pleaded for help before collapsing.

It was later found that she had also stabbed herself in the stomach in an alleged suicide attempt.

Both mother and child were rushed to Thoubal District Hospital, where doctors declared the child dead on arrival.

Priyadarshini, after receiving first aid, has transferred to the psychiatric department of Raj Medicity, Imphal, for further treatment.

The child's body has been sent to JNIMS mortuary for post-mortem examination.

Meanwhile, Khongjom police station has registered a case, while a forensic team conducted spot inquest.
