DESAM seeks rejig of OBC scholarship rules

Imphal, August 18 2024: Opposing the notiffcation issued by Directorate for Welfare of OBC & SC director on July 30, Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has urged Union minister of social justice & empowerment Dr Virendra Kumar to rectify the eligibility criteria to apply for the Pre-Matric Scholarship by OBC students (Class IX and X) in Manipur and include students belonging to private institutions.

As per a letter addressed to the Union minister on August 12, DESAM social welfare director Ningthoujam Robinson refereed to the notification issued on July 30 by the director (OBC & SC), that only the students of government institutes are eligible to apply for the Pre-Matriculate Scholarship for OBC students (Class IX-X).

The notification is arbitrary and discriminates the OBC students studying in private institutions where many students belonging to poor families are pursuing their studies and they too deserve the same right.

Moreover, there are obvious reasons for the parents to admit their wards in private institutions.

DESAM further prayed for rectifying the notification to include students of private institutions for the OBC scholarship to bring the logical end of justice and in the larger interest of all the students of Manipur before a mass agitation erupts.
