ND&PS court acquits two in drug case

Imphal, August 07 2024:
Two persons out of six accused in a drug-related case registered by Imphal Division of Customs Anti-Smuggling Unit in 2016 have been acquitted by the ND&PS special court.
Having heard the case on June 29, July 22 and 31, the judgement passed Tuesday declared the duo not guilty in the case.
As per the case dossiers the accused persons are Th Nemjalam Mate alias Lalam, Vinod Prasad, Amar Kumar Das, Manoranjan Modak, Bijit Das and Ajit Kumar Das.
On May 13, 2016, the Customs Unit arrested Ajit Kumar Das and Bijit Das with WY tablets from near Hotel City Heart, MG Avenue and on questioning the two Nemjalam Mate, Vinod Prasad, Amar Kumar Das and Manoranjan Modak Were also rounded up along with recovery of 5041 WY tablets, weighing around 476.10 gram and estimated to worth Rs 50,41,000 in the international market.
During proceedings of the case, Nemjalam Mate and Amar Kumar absconded and were declared as proclaimed offenders.
After hearing counsels of prosecution and defence, the court convicted Ajit Kumar Das under Section 22 (C) of ND&PS Act and Bijit Das under Section 29 of ND&PS Act and acquitted Vinod Prasad and Manoranjan Modak as the prosecution failed to prove and establish the offences mentioned against the latter duo.
The court also declared that term of sentence against Bijit Das and Ajit Kumar Das will be considered in the next hearing along with directing Superintendent, Customs Head Quarter Preventive Unit, North Eastern Region, Shillong to take necessary steps to dispose the seized contraband.
