Imphal, March 05 2025:
Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal director professor Guruaribam Sunil Kumar Sharma has made history by becoming the first from northeast India to successfully complete Advanced Virtual Autopsy (AVA) training.
In a statement, RIMS Media Cell informed that the training conducted from February 24 to 28, 2025, in Leicester, United Kingdom, focused on the use of imaging technologies like CT scan, MRI, and 3D scanning to examine deceased bodies.
Virtual autopsy (Virtopsy) offers non-invasive, bloodless methods to preserve the body's integrity, providing a complete, detailed examination from head to toe.
This technique improves forensic reports by enabling simultaneous analysis by experts through tele-forensics, while the data can be archived, shared, and analysed remotely, explained the media cell statement.
Professor Sunil Sharma's achievement marks a major step forward for forensic medicine in Northeast India.
His expertise will enhance forensic investigations at RIMS and inspire the adoption of modern technologies, bridging the gap between traditional and contemporary forensic practices in India, it added.
