₹25 lakh worth of tobacco products destroyed

Imphal, May 03 2025:
Around Rs 25 lakh worth of tobacco products, namely T5 Royal Tobacco, which were seized by Meira Paibi activists of Maharabi and Tendongyan and handed over fo Sekmai police station, were burned at Heibonglok on Friday.
The tobacco products were destroyed by designated officer of Food Safety Imphal West along with food safety officers, Meira Paibi members of Tendongyan and Maharabi and Sekmai PS team.
In this regard, Food Safety Officer, Imphal West Usham Arunkumar said that around 100 bags of T5 Royal Tobacco were seized by the Meira Paibi members and kept in the custody of Sekmai PS, with the latter handing over the same to Food Safety, Imphal West.
Along with registering a case, the impounded products were produced on April 30 before the court of Additional Magistrate, Imphal West, which ordered for its disposal and slapped penalty of Rs 1.5 lakh under section 58 of Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 against owner of the products, identified as one Om Vishnu Koijam of Thangmeiband Maisnam Leikai.
In compliance with the order, the tobacco products were destroyed in the presence of the Meira Paibi members and media, in collaboration with Sekmai police, he added.
