AR conducts wreath-lying ceremony

Imphal, March 02 2025:
Assam Rifles organised a wreath-laying ceremony at Sehlon village in Chandel district to honour the valour and sacrifice of jemadar Lal Bahadur Viswakarma, and riflemen Jit Bahadur Thapa, Sarbadhan Sunar, and TKC Varkey, who laid down their lives during an intense counter-insurgency operation in Aizawl, Mizoram, on March 2, 1966 .
On the night of February 28, 1966, MNF rebels launched coordinated attacks on various strategic locations in Mizoram, including the Aizawl district treasury and police camps.
Their offensive escalated with an assault on the Assam Rifles Battalion Headquarters in Aizawl, aiming to destabilise the region.
During the operation, a patrol unit led by jemadar Viswakarma was ambushed by MNF insurgents near a school, resulting in fatal casualties, including Lal Bahadur Viswakarma, Jit Bahadur Thapa, Sarbadhan Sunar, and TKC Varkey, according to a PRO IGAR (S) release.
Senior Assam Rifles officials led the solemn ceremony, recounting the courage of the fallen soldiers to instil pride among personnel.
Over 120 Assam Rifles personnel paid their respects by laying wreaths in honour of the martyrs, it added.
