Imphal, June 01 2024:
Drawing urgent attention of the agriculture and allied departments, the Farmers' Wing of COCOMI has pointed out that the state has been battling severe natural calamities for the past month, significantly impacted by the ongoing climate crisis.
Early May saw torrential rainfall accompanied by hailstorms damaging thousands of houses, followed by devastating floods in the wake of Cyclone Remal.
The flooding resulted in substantial property damage, loss of poultry and livestock, crop destruction, and affected fish farms.
In a statement, the farmers' wing emphasised the need for government policies to facilitate immediate reporting and response to natural calamities.
The recent series of disasters has exacerbated the ongoing ethnic crisis, further straining the state's economy.
The farmers' wing highlighted the critical role of agriculture in the state's economy and urged the agriculture and allied departments to take extra initiatives, including sanctioning adequate funds to cover the losses.
The statement stressed the importance of framing policies to ensure economic recovery and warned against the misappropriation of funds intended for farmers and workers.
Officials attempting to divert such funds should be seen as adversaries to the growth and development of the state.
It also called for the development of a strong work culture, mutual understanding, and increased production of crops and vegetables to achieve self-reliance in food, which is essential for improving the state's economy.
In light of these challenges, the farmers' wing underscored the urgent need for coordinated efforts to support the affected communities and restore the state's agricultural sector.
