Woman hurt as wall collapses at Ukhrul

Ukhrul, May 30 2025: Incessant rainfall battering the State has caused retaining walls to collapse in two areas of Ukhrul district - Sihai Khunou and Tangrei DC quarter in Ukhrul Town.

It is reported that the retaining wall at Sihai Khonou collapsed and fell onto an adjacent house, injuring a middle-aged woman.

The injured woman has been identified as Atamla Shaiza (46), w/o Ramyo Shaiza of Sihai Khonou and she sustained multiple injuries and was rushed to the district hospital in Ukhrul for treatment.

According to her family, the heavy downpour caused the retaining wall to collapse and fall onto their kitchen at around 6 pm yesterday.

The woman (Atamla Shaiza) bore multiple injuries and was immediately evacuated to district hospital, Ukhrul for further treatment.

Sihai Khunou is about 46 kms away from Ukhrul Town.

In a separate incident, a newly constructed retaining wall of the DC's residence at Tangrei, Ukhrul, collapsed completely due to heavy rainfall yesterday, obstructing vehicle movement for several hours.

The road was later cleared and restored after the DC's staff removed the debris from the roadside.

Speaking to the media, some leaders from Tangrei locality said that the retaining wall, constructed last November, which was around 30 meters long and 2.5 meters high, collapsed completely, indicating poor work quality.

Meanwhile, the incessant rain has triggered multiple landslides in various sections, blocking the Ukhrul-Tadubi Road and Ukhrul-Jessami Road and authorities are working to clear the landslide debris to restore vehicular movement.

Deputy Commissioner I/c of Ukhrul, P Duna Duo, issued a public advisory outlining safety and precautionary measures following the 'Orange Alert Warning' for Ukhrul district.

The District Administration has set up an emergency control room in all the block headquarters of Ukhrul district along with contact numbers for any emergencies viz 8730890392/9774447465 (District level), 8974416058 (Jessami), 8974074561 (Lungchong Meiphai), 8974656395 (Chingai) and 9089944197 (Ukhrul) .
