Sangai Fest traces changing texture of Potloi

Imphal, November 29 2011: Potloi, a customary bridal wear for Meitei women and a compulsory costume for the lead female protagonist of the world famous Ras Leela has undergone many changes since the time of King Bheigyachandra and these changes are vividly represented in the ongoing Manipur Tourism Sangai Festival.

Konsam Kunjaraj of Uripok Sorbon Thingel is reproducing the changes that Potloi has undergone starting from the time of king Bheigyachandra till the contemporary period by dividing the intervening period into five phases.

Konsam Kunjaraj said that the textures and pattern of Potloi currently in vogue is different from the Potloi worn during the period of Bheigyachandra.

The changes that Potloi underwent are being reproduced in five different Potlois.

People may note the changes by visiting the stalls where the Potlois with different patterns and textures are being displayed and the stall is also proving the facility to lend out these Potlois, Kunjaraj said.

Incidentally, different varieties of soft toys made by 10 girls who have received training District Industrial Centre are also being exhibited in the festival on trial basis.

Prices of the toys range from Rs 30 to Rs 3000 .

K Baby who is one among the 10 girls running the stall said that they made the soft toys after receiving training for 14 months and the raw materials were provided by Moirangthem Rajen of Khurai Puthiba Leikai.

She said that their stall is selling toys worth Rs 10,000 on a daily basis.

Dolls made in the figures of Meitei deities like Nongpok Ningthou and Panthou are being exhibited in the festival.

H Sushila from Kakwa Nameirakpam Leikai who is the principal designer of these dolls said that her stall has dolls as high as six and half feet whose prices are Rs 11,000 .

The smallest doll is sold at Rs 500 .

One six and half feet doll was bought from the spot, others were delivered after receiving order, Sushila added.
