Imphal, July 27 2024:
Highligh-ting the plight of displaced women and girls living in relief camps for the past 14 months, the COCOMI Wo-men Wing has sought inter- vention of the National Com-mission of Women (NCW) for immediate remedial actions.
Pointing out that of the more than 60,000 internally displaced persons, more than half of them are women and children, the COCOMI Wo-men Wing has urged the NCW to recommend appropriate measures to the Central Government.
The COCOMI Women Wing submitted a memorandum to the NCW Chair- person on July 26 .
It sought creation of a dedicated monitoring cell of the National commission to constantly monitor and collect factual data of the sufferings of the women victims from the ground and take immediate remedial actions and also recommend appropriate measures to the Central Government.
It also sought creation of a special economic centre in collaboration with National Disaster Relief Force, National Disaster Management Authority or any other Government bodies with funds from corporate social responsibility of reputed com- panies and making it a working place for women victims of violence so as to give them a chance to live with respect.
The COCOMI Women Wing urged the NCW to recommend and exert pressure on the Central and State Governments to set up a dedicated girls' hostels for the girl victims of the violence hit Manipur.
It also sought engagement of various educational trusts across the country to sponsor female victims, facilitating their enrolment in educational institutions for appropriate and comprehensive study programmes.
The COCOMI Women Wing further sought initiation of specific innovative policies and programmes for bringing proper rehabilitation of the women victims of this unprecedented Manipur violence.
The memorandum highlighted that the most important issue in the relief camp is the lack of privacy for housewives and girl children.
Lack of personal space for study and psychological health has taken heavy toll on the women and adolescent girls, it said.
Another major issue is the dire economic situation of the IDPs.
The women IDPs have lost their workplace and thus cut off from all sources of income.
The little that the Government and generous people have given cannot fulfil the daily requirements of the families, it added.
