The Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly Dr Maniruddin Sheikh and Member of Manipur Legislative Assembly Dr M Nara left here this morning for the 52nd Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference to be held in Abuja, Nigeria from September 1 to 10.Before his departure, Dr Maniruddin Sheikh said he had prepared himself for active participation in two workshops particularly on 'the role of parliamentarians in promoting good governance through increased fiscal transparency' and 'strategies in the care and support of HIV/AIDS orphans and other vulnerable children: the role of parliamentarians' in the conference.
Dr M Nara stated that he would take part actively in the plenary session on the gender-related theme-'equal participation of women and men in decision making processes at all levels, with particular emphasis on political participation and leadership' in the conference.
He would also participate in the discussions on HIV/AIDS, environment degradation and good governance in the conference.
Dr M Nara said while attending the Commonwealth Conference, the Indian Government had given the delegates to visit another three countries to observe and study their parliamentary system.
They had chosen three countries namely China, United Kingdom and Germany, he added.
He further stated they would stay in Beijing for two days to study their silk production and medical system along with population control.
They would stay in London, the headquarters of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association for three days to study the parliamentary system.
Then after the Commonwealth Conference, they would visit Frankfurt, Germany to study the socio-economic life of their people.
Dr Maniruddin Sheikh and Dr M Nara who are among the 47-member Indian delegation led by the Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee will reach Imphal on September 12 after completion of their itinerary in the foreign countries.
