Bhalla takes climate change concern to students

Imphal, February 26 2025:
Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla has urged students to become climate change ambassadors.
For a sustainable future, students should acknowledge the impacts of climate change, and become ambassadors to carry messages of conserving natural resources, he said while addressing a National conference on Implications of Climate Change & Conservation of Natural Resources and Cultural Heritage 2025 at the auditorium of Manipur University, Canchipur today.
Governor Bhalla said, "The impact of climate change is one of the most pressing global challenges of our time, not only to our natural ecosystem but also to our rich cultural heritage" .
Climate change has affected the rich flora and fauna of Manipur, and it is "our shared responsibility" to take care of these resources for future generations, he said.
The Governor further stated that the Government of India and the State Government are working together and taking pro-active steps to mitigate the impact of climate change.
He said, "The fight against climate change, the conservation of natural resources and cultural heritage are inherently intertwined.
Recognizing these connections, the Government has made significant strides through its policies and initiatives in
mitigating climate change" .
He highlighted initiatives taken up by the Government of India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, such as 'One World, One Sun, One Grid', and the Swachh Bharat Mission.
Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, Anurag Bajpai said climate change has impacts on both the nature and culture of the State.
Many flora and fauna have become extinct due to climate change, which also threatens food and water security.
The Loktak Lake, which is home to Sangai is a historical and cultural heritage for the State.
Younger and future generations must be taught of the significance of the Loktak and steps should be taken up collectively to conserve it, he said.
Many academicians, scholars and resource persons attended the conference.
On the sideline of the event, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla also inspected various facilities at the Department of Botany, and interacted with the students.
Prof N Lokendra Singh, VC, MU, among others attended the event.
