Moreh, June 25: Pledging to uphold peace and harmony and respect the interest of all the communities living in Moreh, thousands of people took out a mass peace rally here today.

The rally organised by the community leaders of Moreh under the sponsorship of Additional Deputy Commissioner of Moreh was flagged off from Moreh Police Station at around 7.30 am.

People of different communities take out a rally at Moreh to usher in peace and tranquility in the backdrop of the recent violence

The rally snaked through the roads of Moreh Bazar, CWC Club, St George High School before taking the New Moreh Road.

From there, it passed through Phenom Veng, Gate No.I, Nepali Basti, Muslim Basti, Chavangphai, Chingdong Leikai, Moreh Hospital Road, NH-39 Check post and reassembled in front of Moreh Police Station where a public meeting was held.

During the meeting a five-point resolution was adopted.

The resolutions include upholding peace and harmony among the Moreh denizens for all times to come, to respect the interest of all communities living in Moreh, not to allow any outside interference to disintegrate the unity and peaceful co-existence among the people, to work together for peace, prosperity and development of the town and to jointly work to achieve all the above objectives.

Apart from two MLAs namely K Ranjit and N Biren, representatives of various organisations from Imphal like All Manipur Tribal Womens Union, United Mothers' Organisation, All Manipur Social Reformation and Development Samaj, All India Kangla Pakhangba Temple Development Society, etc also participated in the rally.

Around 4750 people participated in the rally carrying placards inscribed with slogans like 'Don't make our town a killing field', 'Stop killing civilians', 'Our goal is unity, peace for development', 'Live and let live', 'We want peace'.

The main objective in organising the peace rally was to rebuild and retain the age old traditional brotherhood among all communities residing in Moreh which was wracked by violence.
