Man makes history with advance payment of property tax

A person named Takhellambam Chandan of Chingmeirong Maning Leikai has become the first to pay property tax in advance.
He paid Rs 8,186.87 against his properties to the Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) yesterday.
Speaking at his residence at Chingmeirong Maning Leikai today, IMC's Deputy Commissioner Th Siddhartha said property taxes are collected under the Manipur Municipalities Act 1994 and Manipur Municipalities Property Tax Rule 2019.The survey for collecting property tax has been completed, and owners who will pay the tax will be given a 17-digit Unique Property Identification Number (UPIN).
This unique number will be displayed at the houses of the owners, Siddhartha said.
The property tax collected will be used by the IMC in all developmental works it carries out.
The revenue will also help the corporation in implementing various projects, he said.
The tax will not be applied to empty plots.
Owners will pay the tax according to the building they have.
The tax is highest for pucca houses followed by semi-pucca and kutcha.
The tax will also depend on the number of storeys a building has.
It will also depend on the area/size of the building, Siddhartha said, adding the categories and the rates of the taxes have been published.
Property owner T Chandan said he is happy to be the first one to pay the tax.
He said property tax will help IMC take up developmental projects.
Municipal Commissioner Joycee Kemp appreciated Chief Minister N Biren Singh and MAHUD Minister Yumnam Khemchand for introducing the property tax.
