Senapati, June 24 2025:
A tragic incident occurred on Tuesday morning when a 50-year-old farmer from Khongnem Thana was swept away by the surging water of Barak River.
The victim, identified as Athisii Athikho, was crossing the Khongnem Thana hanging bridge on his way to the paddy field when he got caught by the strong river current and was carried away.
The incident occurred between 9 and 9.30 am Tuesday.
Locals suspected that the victim had lost balance while attempting to cross the bridge.
Immediate search efforts by local villagers and volunteers were not successful.
According to locals, the river had swollen rapidly in the last few days due to heavy rainfall in the region, and the bridge surface was very slippery.
Senapati district police have launched a search and rescue operation in collaboration with local villagers, but the victim has not been found.
Meanwhile, the district police have written to Deputy Commissioner Mamoni Doley seeking the intervention of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) in the search and rescue operation.
The DC has reportedly written to authorities concerned for requisition of an SDRF team.
Search operations are still underway.
The incident has raised concerns about public safety amid the monsoon season.
