Imphal, June 23 2024:
A bailey bridge at Kanto collapsed today when a heavily loaded truck was crossing it.
The bridge over Leima-khong River was built under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) .
It is reported that the truck which was carrying supplies for Leimakhong Army weighed more than the maximum load which the bridge could support.
The truck which was heading to Leimakhong from Pheidinga side mistakenly headed towards Kanto Awang Leikai after crossing the bailey bridge.
The driver noticed that the direction in which he was driving was wrong so he took a u-turn and drove toward the same bridge to cross the river again.

The bridge, however, collapsed when the truck was crossing it at around 10.30 am and the driver Abdul Ali (34), s/o Badsha Ali of Nalbari, Assam got injured.
Altogether three persons were in the truck including the driver who was given first aid at Khurkhul Primary Health Centre.
From the health centre, the driver has been referred to RIMS.
Following the mishap, the locals said that they won't allow anyone to retrieve the truck nor the materials it brought until they get a convincing answer on who will repair the bridge.
The locals said that the bridge is very important to them as it is a vital link for several villages viz Kanto Awang Leikai, Kanto Makha Leikai, Khurkhul and Sekmai, among others.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, Superintending Engineer of PMGSY Jagdish said that they have taken stock of the condition of the bridge.
He said that the truck was transporting CI sheets and mattresses which weighed more than 30 tonnes (not including the weight of the truck) .
Saying that the maximum load which the bridge can support was 24 tonnes, he added that no FIR has been registered as of yet.
He added that he will consult with the Chief Engineer tomorrow and see what can be done.
